Senior Pet Care
Just like humans, when pets age, they require more frequent check-ups to detect early symptoms of diseases or other health issues before they can become severe. At K-M Regional Veterinary Hospital, our senior pet care services in Kesson, MN, help to proactively address problems specific to your older companion so they can best enjoy their golden years.
At K-M Regional Veterinary Hospital, our senior wellness exams include a complete blood count, urinalysis, blood chemistry panel, and parasite evaluation, all of which are tailored to the specific needs of older pets. We can also guide you on how to support your senior pet’s health with individualized diets and specially formulated food.
Supporting Your Senior Pet’s Well-Being
One of the best ways to support your senior pet’s health is to keep them active and engaged in regular exercise. Play and general physical activity help prevent your pet’s senses from deteriorating as they age while also keeping their muscles strong. However, always stay aware of your pet’s mannerisms during play and make sure not to push them into exercising more than they are comfortable. Remember that excessive movement may be painful for older pets and be prepared to give them a rest as needed.
Senior pet owners should also be aware of common signs of health issues in older animals. If you notice any of the following symptoms in your pet, we recommend scheduling a veterinary appointment right away:
- Sudden weight loss or gain
- Significant decrease or increase in appetite or failure to eat for more than two days
- Noticeable decrease in vision
- Increasing inactivity or amount of time spent sleeping
- Excessive panting
- Hair loss, especially if accompanied by scratching in the balding area (as opposed to general)
- Seizures or convulsing
