The best way to welcome your new kitty into your family is with thorough veterinary care. At K-M Regional Veterinary Hospital, we provide comprehensive kitten care services in Kasson, MN, to support young cats’ well-being and set them up for a lifetime of good health.
We can’t wait to meet your new feline family member! Our comprehensive kitten care services ensure they’re set for years of health and happiness.
Pre-Kitten Planning
Before you bring your kitten home, prepare for their arrival by purchasing the appropriate supplies. This should include food and water bowls, chew toys, grooming supplies, bedding, collar and harness, identification tag, crate, and gates. Shopping for your kitten before you welcome them to your home will better ensure you are prepared for their needs and won’t have to rush out for more goods.
Getting your kitten on a feeding schedule they’re comfortable with is crucial. When you pick up your kitten, ask what food they were last fed and when. Adhere to that schedule until your first kitten visit with us. At your appointment, we will discuss your kitten’s breed, anticipated lifestyle, and nutritional needs.
For your kitten’s first few days in your home, keep them in one room with their carrier, bed, food bowls, litter box, and toys. Cats thrive on routine, so feed your new kitten at the same time and in the same place each day to build a healthy feeding routine.
You’ll need to kitten-proof the area where your new pet will spend most of their time during their first few months living with you. Once you think you’ve completely kitten-proofed the space, lie on the floor and look around once more to get a kitten’s-eye view — often, this will reveal additional spaces to improve. If you have children, please remind them not to overwhelm the kitten the first day they come home.
Your Kitten’s First Wellness Exam
After you’ve brought your kitten home, schedule an appointment with us to plan your kitten’s first wellness exam. This initial visit includes a thorough “nose-to-tail” physical and dental examination that enables us to develop an individualized wellness care program for your kitten, including proper vaccinations, parasite protection, and proper nutrition.
Your kitten’s first exam also allows us to first meet your kitten and build a new relationship with them, as well as learn your expectations as a client and a pet owner. This early period in your cat’s life is the best time to address your questions or concerns about your new pet and kitten care in general.
When visiting with your new kitten for the first time, please be sure to bring along any prior health records that you received with your kitten, such as vaccine history, deworming, neutering, and other past medical history.
